Sandals are considered the first shoes ever to grace the human feet.It is believed that 5.000,000 years ago in the ice age human wore sandals made of animal skin and much later as evidenced through research they were made of rice and papyrus leaves and even sea weeds.Ancient paintings of the paleolithic period some 15000 years ago depicted humans wearing sandals believed to be made of leaves or wood material.
What makes a sandal so special and seperates it from other forms of footwear is the common understanding that a sandal leaves most or all of the foot exposed.
In many countries the sandal has not changed from its early development while in others it has evolved as an art form.It is still the primary footwear in the warmer regions of the world.
Soial culture too accounted for the preference of sandals over other footwear in many countries. In Asiatic cultures influenced by Buddhism,Hinduism
iIslam and christianity spelt out a value system based on simplicity, openness and co-habitation had shaped the thought of people for many centuries. In such cultures people did not accord much ado on adorning their feet except for those who were in authority of power and class who required finease and acceptance in their respective roles. In many of these countries their national attires suited the sandal more than the other modes of footwear. In India the political leaders in their typical dresses look more proper and handsome in the sandals and imply their affinity with the people a majority of whom go barefeet in their routine activities in the villages.
Today sandals are designed for every purpose including fashion.Exercise sandals have taken off in popularity,as have dress sandals that can be worn with even the most formal evening gown. They are built for hiking, walking
and comfort and are most appealing to look at,
What is special about the sandal is that it has no threat to its popularity by even its nearest challenge from other modes of footwear. The feeling of ease, comfort and elasticity that a sandal gives the feet is beyond measure and perhaps is the reason for its global success as a footwear.Yet the biggest decider in its popularity I rekon is to be in its relative affordability in price .
