A gal’s got to have sole:Study finds shoes do really make the woman

If the shoe fits buy it.
So goes the universal motto of women,if pop culture is to be believed ,with everyone from leading ladies to literary heroines plunking down their purses for a footwear fix.And a new survey of women’s shoe-shopping habits does little to modify that stereotype.

In analyzing the spending of 3,000 women,a British Pollster finds, the average female buys 7 new pairs of shoes a year, and for a 67- year period. At close to $ 400 annually-which may even be low -balling-the grand lifetime total tops $ 26,000.

It is an astounding figure,to be sure. But without male comparison ,critics say it’s yet another of shoe puchases having become a shorthand for female frivolity.
“It really is a very feminist issue”said Elizebeth Semmelhack, senior curator of Bata Shoe Museum in Torronto.
The new survey conducted by OnePoll for GoCompare.com,does’nt address male shoe budjests.Pollsters do however report that a quarter of women rarely divulge their shoe purchases to their partners ,as he does’nt understand their obsession” and that”predictably 29 percent of ladies say shoes are the one thing they can’t resist buying, regardless of whether they can afford them”.
Hayley Parsons, spokeswoman for GoCompare calls shoes her gender’s “one major weakness”,suggesting that women’s willingness to lie about footwear purchases to their partners”Clearly illustrates how guilty they are feeling.”
It is a mindset that is traced back to Enlightenment. When males gave up heels for more sober dress and elevated footwear became a symbol of femininity, superficiality and irrationality qualities that made women “unworthy” of education or political participation but desireable as mates.

“Even today you damn a woman by saying she wears  sensible shoes. You de-sex her immidiately”, says Semmelhack, author of Heights of Fashion,A History of Elevated Shoes”.
