Always be wary of what you might encounter as you run along the road or a sidewalk. The common impediments on your path may include lose road grates, road debris ,jagged sidewalks, water puddles ,mud, snow ,ice, trash and even dog ‘shit’ occasioanlly. There’re more dangers that are likely to be more harmful caused by vehicles popping in and out in a busy network of roads ,hitting you unawares. The snarling dog that gives you a chase when it mistakenly feels being dared by you,can pose yet another problem.
Always be focused on what you do. You,re sharing the roadway or sidewalk with other people ,vehicles and even domestic pets being taken for walks by the owners. This warning may sound simple enogh. But,how often do we see runers and joggers scampering along the road glued to their iPods, radios and cell phones.Such indulgences may help you become less solitary and absorbed more in pleasure. But you may be courting many a risk in such situations.
Some states have specified ” Rules of the road” as a law for runners and joggers. The rest is common sense.
*Prefer sidewalks above road when available and in good condition.
* Keep to the safe side of the road so that you can see the oncoming traffic.
* Your visibility to others is essential for your own safety. Run or jog during daytime, especially in the early hours of the morning and before the dusk fall in the evening.Wear bright colored clothing so that your movements will stand out against the rest in the background.
* Night time jogging carries many risks and is best avoided altogether. If you must run at night ,wear light colored or luminescent clothing for better visibility .Your running wear should include right running shoes,jackets/shirts with reflective tapes while some runners wear an armband with a flashing light. With fewer people on the streets at night, you may even encounter some untoward incidents such as assaults and abusive speech from nefarious elements that haunt the darkness of the hour.As a precaution tell someone at home the route you take for the run before you set off and never frequent one particular route by regularly changing it to confuse any prowler.
* Be watchful of the motor vehicles. Should an accident occur you are more likely to be the loser. Always step aside when necessary for the running vehicles for your own safety.
* Have your ears attuned to the noises around such as the toot of the vehicle, rumble of an engine, yelling of a person and even the barking sound of a dog because because they are your alarm signals to take heed when on the run. Keep off your ear phones and cell phones for your personal safety.
