In the mountain of God Moses perceives the fire in the bush that does’nt burn it as a calling from an angel and in his enthusiasm to be in the beatific company of God, he cries out,”Here I am”.
At that moment God appeared and sternly intoned,
“Do not draw closer.Remove your shoes from your feet for the ground that you stand upon is hallowed”.
God’s response was not given in reproof but in guidence, not only to Moses but to all across the generations.
One interpretation of God’s admonishment is that shoes are outer garments that protect our feet when we tread upon earth’s soil. Thus the shoes represent the body-the outer garment that encases and protect the soul as it sojourns in the soil of the material realm. So to ascend the mountain of God ,to enhance our spirit we must remove our shoes.
But once having ascended the mountain of God and experienced the heavenly bliss, one would not find that to descend the mountain ,to be an appealing call.Yet the God wants us to descend. How do we descend? Once again by removing our shoes.
God calls on us to remove our shoes and descend because the ground below is hallowed. What makes the ground holy? God’s wish. It is his wish that we share the insights and inspirations gleaned above with those who have yet to climb. That’s why the foot of the mountain is so much holier than its head.
